Connecting Engage to Claude Code using Composio

What is the Engage MCP server, and what's possible with it?

The Engage MCP server is an implementation of the Model Context Protocol that connects your AI agent and assistants like Claude, Cursor, etc directly to your Engage account. It provides structured and secure access to your customers, accounts, and lists, so your agent can create users, retrieve customer details, manage list subscriptions, organize accounts, and remove user data on your behalf.

  • Customer and account creation: Have your agent create new customers or accounts in Engage with the details needed for personalized messaging.
  • User lookup and review: Let the agent retrieve a specific customer or account, or list users so you can review your Engage audience.
  • List subscription management: Direct your agent to create a user and subscribe them to a list, or add an existing customer or account to one or more lists.
  • Customer account organization: Instruct your agent to associate a customer with one or more accounts to keep relationships organized.
  • List and data cleanup: Have your agent review available lists, retrieve a specific list, archive lists you no longer use, or permanently delete a customer or account and its data.

Connecting Engage via Composio SDK

Composio SDK is the underlying technology that powers these integrations. It provides a universal gateway with full programmatic control. You can programmatically generate an MCP URL with the app you need (here Engage) for even more tool search precision. It's secure and reliable.

How the Composio SDK works

The Composio SDK follows a three-phase workflow:

  1. Discovery: Searches for tools matching your task and returns relevant toolkits with their details.
  2. Authentication: Checks for active connections. If missing, creates an auth config and returns a connection URL via Auth Link.
  3. Execution: Executes the action using the authenticated connection.

Prerequisites

Install Claude Code

Set up Claude Code

  • Follow the prompts to sign in with your Anthropic account
  • Complete the authentication flow

Set up environment variables

  • COMPOSIO_API_KEY authenticates with Composio (get it from Composio dashboard)

Install Composio library

Create a script to generate a Composio MCP URL for Engage. This URL will be used to connect Claude Code to Engage.

What's happening
  • We import the Composio client and load environment variables
  • Create a Composio instance with your API key
  • Call create() to create a Tool Router session for Engage
  • The returned mcp.url is the MCP server URL that Claude Code will use
  • The script prints this URL so you can copy it

Run the script and copy the MCP URL

  • The script connects to Composio and creates a Tool Router session
  • It prints the MCP URL and the exact command you need to run
  • Copy the entire claude mcp add command from the output

Add Engage MCP to Claude Code

In your terminal, add the MCP server using the command from the previous step. The command format is:

  • claude mcp add registers a new MCP server with Claude Code
  • --transport http specifies that this is an HTTP-based MCP server
  • The server name (engage-composio) is how you'll reference it
  • The URL points to your Composio Tool Router session
  • --headers includes your Composio API key for authentication

After running the command, close the current Claude Code session and start a new one for the changes to take effect.

Verify the installation

Check that your Engage MCP server is properly configured.

  • This command lists all MCP servers registered with Claude Code
  • You should see your engage-composio entry in the list
  • This confirms that Claude Code can now access Engage tools

Authenticate Engage

The first time you try to use Engage tools, you'll be prompted to authenticate.

  • Claude Code will detect that you need to authenticate with Engage
  • It will show you an authentication link
  • Open the link in your browser (or copy/paste it)
  • Complete the Engage authorization flow
  • Return to the terminal and start using Engage through Claude Code

Once authenticated, you can ask Claude Code to perform Engage operations in natural language. For example:

  • "Send SMS to users about Black Friday deals"
  • "Create and schedule a new email campaign"
  • "Get analytics on last week's push notifications"
