## Introduction

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, available on the web, in the desktop app, and on mobile. Cowork is its agent for knowledge work, and it runs on all of those surfaces too. Connected to your apps, Claude can work with your files and services to accomplish complex tasks on your behalf.
This guide walks you through the easiest and most secure way to connect your Unleash account to Claude via Composio Connect, enabling it to list production feature flags by project, create a gradual rollout for checkout, disable a risky flag in staging, and more such actions on your behalf without compromising your account security.
Setup is the same on Claude Web, Desktop, and Cowork, and you only need to do it once. The connector is tied to your account, so it's available in all three.

## Also integrate Unleash with

- [ChatGPT](https://composio.dev/toolkits/unleash/framework/chatgpt)
- [Hermes](https://composio.dev/toolkits/unleash/framework/hermes-agent)
- [Atomic Agent](https://composio.dev/toolkits/unleash/framework/atomic-agent)

## Connect Unleash to Claude Cowork

### Connecting Unleash to Claude Web, Desktop, and Cowork
Two ways to add the Composio connector. Pick whichever you prefer.
### 1. Add with one click
Click the button. Claude opens with the Composio connector filled in. Click Add, then go to step 2.
[Add to Claude](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=Composio&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fconnect.composio.dev%2Fmcp)
### Add manually
In Claude Desktop, click Customize in the left sidebar, then select Connectors and click the + icon at the top.
Click Add custom connector and paste in the Composio MCP server URL:

```bash
https://connect.composio.dev/mcp
```

## What is the Unleash MCP server, and what's possible with it?

The Unleash MCP server is an implementation of the Model Context Protocol that connects your AI agent and assistants like Claude, Cursor, etc directly to your Unleash account. It provides structured and secure access to feature flags, projects, environments, strategies, dependencies, and release plans, so your agent can create and organize feature flags, configure rollout behavior, manage projects and environments, and govern feature relationships on your behalf.
- Feature flag lifecycle management: Have your agent create, clone, move, archive, and organize feature flags across Unleash projects.
- Project and environment configuration: Let the agent create projects and environments, connect environments to projects, configure access, and set default activation strategies.
- Rollout strategy control: Direct your agent to add activation strategies, release plans, and reusable segments to control how features are enabled.
- Feature dependency management: Instruct your agent to add feature dependencies and check whether dependencies exist across your Unleash instance.
- Access and integration administration: Have your agent configure project access, create API tokens, set up external addons, and manage user access requests.

## Supported Tools

| Tool slug | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `UNLEASH_ADD_ACCESS_TO_PROJECT` | Configure project access | Configure project access for groups and single users. The provided users and groups will be given the roles specified in the payload. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_CHANGE_REQUEST_COMMENT` | This endpoint will add a comment to a change request | This endpoint will add a comment to a change request for the user making the request. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_DEFAULT_STRATEGY_TO_PROJECT_ENVIRONMENT` | Set environment-default strategy | Sets a default strategy for this environment. Unleash will use this strategy by default when enabling a feature flag. Use the wild card "*" for `:environment` to add to all environments. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_ENVIRONMENTS_TO_PROJECT` | Add environments to a project | Sequentially associate multiple environments with one project after rejecting duplicates and existing associations. On the first failure, attempts to remove only additions acknowledged during this run in reverse order. This is a non-atomic compensating workflow that can execute deletions; the response reports forward progress, cleanup attempts, cleanup failures, and possible partial state. A definitive 4xx rejects the failed item, while a 5xx or transport failure leaves that item's outcome unknown because Unleash may have committed it. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_ENVIRONMENT_TO_PROJECT` | Add an environment to a project | Associate one existing environment with a project, optionally configure change requests, and optionally create the default activation strategy used when enabling feature flags in that project environment. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_FEATURE_DEPENDENCIES` | Add feature dependencies | Add multiple parent dependencies to one child feature flag in order. The action rejects existing dependencies before mutation and compensates a failed batch in reverse order by deleting additions made during this run. This non-atomic compensating workflow can execute deletions; inspect complete, partial_state, failed_item_outcome, and rollback_failures. A definitive 4xx rejects the failed item, while a 5xx or transport failure leaves its outcome unknown because Unleash may have committed it. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_FEATURE_DEPENDENCY` | Add a feature dependency | Add a dependency to a parent feature. Each environment will resolve corresponding dependency independently. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_FEATURE_STRATEGY` | Add Feature Strategy | Add one activation strategy configuration to a feature flag in an environment. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_RELEASE_PLAN` | Add a release plan | Adds a release plan to a specific feature flag and environment. |
| `UNLEASH_ADD_TAG_TO_FEATURES` | Add and remove tags across features | Add and remove the supplied tags on every listed feature in a project, creating added tags when needed. Both tags.addedTags and tags.removedTags are required and may be empty; additions are applied before removals. |

Any provided features that don't exist are ignored. |
| `UNLEASH_SET_MAINTENANCE_STATE` | Enable or disable maintenance mode | Enable or disable maintenance mode for the entire Unleash instance. Enabling it makes the instance mostly read-only and blocks all users from changing configuration. The effect is reversible: disabling maintenance mode restores configuration writes without undoing existing configuration. |
| `UNLEASH_SET_OIDC_SETTINGS` | Set OIDC settings | Configure or partially update OpenID Connect login, user auto-creation, roles, group syncing, PKCE, and scopes. Disabling OIDC or replacing invalid credentials can immediately prevent users from signing in; treat the client secret as sensitive. |
| `UNLEASH_SET_PROJECT_ACCESS` | Set users and groups to roles in the current project | Replaces the complete project access configuration with the supplied role assignments. Existing assignments omitted from roles are removed; an empty roles list removes all project access assignments. Within a role, an empty users or groups list removes every assignment of that type for that role. |

| `UNLEASH_UPDATE_FEATURE_TAGS` | Update feature tags | Sync one or many feature tags with PUT, add one tag with POST, or remove one tag with DELETE. Sync requires both added_tags and removed_tags, applies additions before removals, and accepts an empty list for either effect. |
| `UNLEASH_UPDATE_FEATURE_TYPE_LIFETIME` | Update feature type lifetime | Updates the lifetime configuration for the specified [feature flag type](https://docs.getunleash.io/concepts/feature-flags#feature-flag-types). The expected lifetime is an integer representing the number of days before Unleash marks a feature flag of that type as potentially stale. If set to `null` or `0`, then feature flags of that particular type will never be marked as potentially stale. When a feature flag type's expected lifetime is changed, this will also cause any feature flags of this type to be reevaluated for potential staleness. |

## Troubleshooting

### 1. Why does Claude not use the Composio connector for Unleash?

The connector can show as connected, but Claude must use it in each Unleash conversation.
- Click + at the lower left of the chat, or type /.
- Hover Connectors.
- Turn on Composio.
- Ask Claude to connect to Unleash again.

### 2. Why does Claude show an MCP server error before Unleash connects?

Claude can show Couldn't reach the MCP server or Authorization with the MCP server failed when you add the connector for Unleash.
- Check that the connector URL is https://connect.composio.dev/mcp.
- Connectors run from Anthropic's cloud, so your device network is usually not the problem.
- Add the connector again from Customize > Connectors, then ask Claude to connect Unleash.
- If it fails again, send the error and the ofid_ reference id to support@composio.dev.

### 3. Why does the Unleash authorization link not work?

The Composio connector is one server. Your Unleash account connects separately when Claude asks for it.
- If the browser does not open, or the link expires, ask Claude to retry the Unleash connection.
- Composio creates a fresh Unleash authorization link.
- Open that link in your browser and finish the Unleash sign-in.

### 4. Why do Unleash actions fail after they worked before?

The Unleash connection can expire or lose permission.
- Ask Claude to inspect the Unleash connection.
- If the connection is unhealthy, disconnect it when Claude prompts you.
- Reconnect the Unleash account and retry the action.
- If Claude shows a permission prompt, approve it before Claude changes data in Unleash.
- If the action still fails with a permission error, check that the connected account has that permission in Unleash itself.

### 5. How do I switch to a different Unleash account?

Claude can manage the Unleash connection for you.
- Ask Claude to disconnect or delete the current Unleash account.
- Ask Claude to connect Unleash again.
- Open the new Composio authorization link for Unleash.
- Sign in with the other Unleash account in the browser.
- After the account connects, ask Claude to retry the Unleash task.

### 6. Why is my Unleash connection missing in Claude Desktop or on a Team plan?

The connector belongs to your Claude account, so your Unleash connection works in Claude Web, Desktop, and Cowork.
- In Claude Desktop, open Customize > Connectors.
- Next to Composio, click ⋮ and click Clear cache.
- If Unleash tools still do not appear, click ⋮, disconnect, remove the connector, and add it again.
- On Team or Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector before you can connect Unleash.

## Creating MCP Server - Stand-alone vs Composio SDK

The Unleash MCP server connects Claude Web, Desktop, and Cowork to your Unleash account through Composio. Once connected, Claude can use the available Unleash tools and triggers to complete tasks on your behalf.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the differences in Tool Router MCP and Unleash MCP?

With a standalone Unleash MCP server, the agents and LLMs can only access a fixed set of Unleash tools tied to that server. However, with the Composio Tool Router, agents can dynamically load tools from Unleash and many other apps based on the task at hand, all through a single MCP endpoint.

### Can I use Tool Router MCP with Claude Cowork?

Yes, you can. Claude Cowork fully supports MCP integration. You get structured tool calling, message history handling, and model orchestration while Tool Router takes care of discovering and serving the right Unleash tools.

### Can I manage the permissions and scopes for Unleash while using Tool Router?

Yes, absolutely. You can configure which Unleash scopes and actions are allowed when connecting your account to Composio. You can also bring your own OAuth credentials or API configuration so you keep full control over what the agent can do.

### How safe is my data with Composio Tool Router?

All sensitive data such as tokens, keys, and configuration is fully encrypted at rest and in transit. Composio is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and follows strict security practices so your Unleash data and credentials are handled as safely as possible.
