## Introduction

Atomic Agent is an open-source AI agent that runs on your machine and supports local models through llama.cpp. Connect it to 1,500+ apps through Composio, including Semrush.
This guide uses Atomic Agent's built-in Composio integration. You need Atomic Agent v0.5.6 or later, your own Composio API key, and a Semrush account. See the [Atomic Agent documentation](https://atomicagent.io/docs/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-docs) for installation instructions.

## Also integrate Semrush MCP with

- [ChatGPT](https://composio.dev/toolkits/semrush_mcp/framework/chatgpt)
- [Claude Cowork](https://composio.dev/toolkits/semrush_mcp/framework/claude-cowork)
- [Hermes](https://composio.dev/toolkits/semrush_mcp/framework/hermes-agent)

## TL;DR

### How Atomic Agent connects to Semrush
Atomic Agent connects to Composio's Tool Router over Streamable HTTP MCP. It discovers the tools needed for your request, and Composio handles account authentication.
Execution and account-connection tools follow Atomic Agent's configured approval policy. Review any approval prompt before allowing an action on your connected account.

## Connect Semrush MCP to Atomic Agent

### Connect Semrush to Atomic Agent
- Sign up or sign in to the [Composio dashboard](https://dashboard.composio.dev/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-api-key). Copy your API key.
- In Atomic Agent, open the Integrations tab and select Composio. Select API key, press e, paste the key, and press Enter. The tools become available immediately, without a restart.
- Ask Atomic Agent to do something in Semrush. It searches Composio for the right tool.
- On first use, open the sign-in link returned in the chat. Connect your Semrush account, then return to Atomic Agent to continue.
### Headless setup
Add the following line to ~/.atomic-agent/.env, replacing YOUR_COMPOSIO_API_KEY with your key. Start Atomic Agent after saving the file.

```bash
COMPOSIO_API_KEY=YOUR_COMPOSIO_API_KEY
```

## What is the Semrush MCP server, and what's possible with it?

The Semrush MCP server is an implementation of the Model Context Protocol that connects your AI agent and assistants like Claude, Cursor, etc directly to your Semrush account. It provides structured and secure access so your agent can perform Semrush operations on your behalf.

## Supported Tools

| Tool slug | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_AUDIENCE_RESEARCH` | Audience research | Audience Analytics: visitor profile of a domain — demographics (age, gender, income, education, household size, occupation), audience interests, visitor geography by country, audience overlap between domains, purchase conversion, and top domains by industry category. Use when the question is about WHO visits a site or audience composition. For traffic volume, engagement, or acquisition channels, use traffic_overview instead. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_BACKLINKS_RESEARCH` | Backlinks research | Backlink Analytics: for a single domain's link profile — backlinks, referring domains and IPs, anchor texts, geographic and TLD distribution, Authority Score breakdown, domain and referring-domain categories, and historical trends. Analyzes one domain at a time. Not suitable for comparing or cross-referencing backlink data across multiple domains. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_COMPETITORS_RESEARCH` | Competitors research | Competitive Research: find who competes with a domain in organic search, paid search, and Google Shopping (PLA); compare keyword overlap and backlink profiles between multiple domains; analyze market rankings and backlink competitors. Use this when the task involves comparing, contrasting, or cross-referencing two or more domains. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_DOMAIN_OVERVIEW` | Domain overview | Domain Overview: high-level counters for a domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL — Semrush Rank, keyword/traffic/cost totals, PLA, SERP Features. Use-if: rank, score, totals, global rank, or rank trend over time. Avoid-if: you need the individual keywords — use organic_research. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_EXECUTE_REPORT` | Execute report | Execute any Semrush report. Requires params from get_report_schema. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_GET_REPORT_SCHEMA` | Get report schema | Get parameters for a report. MUST call before execute_report if params unknown. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_KEYWORD_RESEARCH` | Keyword research | Keyword Analytics: look up any keyword — search volume, CPC, competition, keyword difficulty, SERP results (organic and paid), related keywords, broad match variations, phrase questions, and ads history. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_ORGANIC_RESEARCH` | Organic research | Organic Search Analytics: the actual keywords and pages a domain, subdomain, or URL ranks for in organic search (position, volume, traffic). Use-if: you need the list of keywords/pages. Avoid-if: Semrush Rank, counts, or rank trend — use domain_overview. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_PAID_SEARCH_RESEARCH` | Paid search research | Paid Search Analytics: keywords that trigger a domain's paid search (Google Ads) results, ad positions, CPCs, traffic estimates, unique ad copies with titles and descriptions, and historical PPC trends. Requires a domain as input — not for keyword-to-domain lookups. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_POSITION_TRACKING` | Position tracking | Position Tracking: ongoing rank monitoring within pre-configured project campaigns — track how a domain ranks for targeted keywords over time, daily position changes in organic and paid search, visibility trends, and landing page performance, by location and device. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_PROJECTS` | Projects | Project Management: list and inspect your Semrush projects (campaigns) — each project's ID, name, and tracked domain, plus which tools are enabled. Use first to obtain the project ID that position_tracking and site_audit require as input. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_SHOPPING_RESEARCH` | Shopping research | Shopping Analytics: keywords that trigger a domain's Google Shopping (PLA) ads, ad positions, traffic estimates, and unique product listings with titles and prices. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_SITE_AUDIT` | Site audit | Site Audit: technical SEO health analysis within pre-configured project campaigns — crawl a website to find errors, warnings, and notices, site health score, page-level issue details with fix recommendations, and historical audit snapshots to track progress. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |
| `SEMRUSH_MCP_TRAFFIC_OVERVIEW` | Traffic overview | Traffic Overview: website traffic volume and engagement — total visits, unique visitors, pages per visit, bounce rate, visit duration, daily/weekly trends, acquisition channels (direct, referral, search, social, paid), traffic destinations, top pages, subdomain and subfolder breakdown. Use when the question is about HOW MUCH traffic a site gets or HOW users engage. For visitor demographics, interests, or geographic origin, use audience_research instead. Returns available reports. NEXT: get_report_schema then execute_report. |

## Troubleshooting

### Why is my API key rejected?

Copy the key directly from the Composio dashboard. Atomic Agent requires ASCII characters because it sends the key in an HTTP header. Remove any extra characters introduced when copying.

### Why are Composio tools unavailable after saving a key?

Check that you use Atomic Agent v0.5.6 or later and that Composio is enabled in your configuration. A "composio": { "enabled": false } setting disables the integration while keeping the saved key on disk.

### Does Composio have a free plan?

The Hobby plan includes 100,000 tool calls per month. Composio-managed OAuth apps have a lower included allowance. See [Composio pricing](/pricing) for the current limits that apply to your connection.

## Conclusion

### Use Semrush from Atomic Agent
With your account connected, ask Atomic Agent to work with Semrush in natural language. You can connect more apps through the same Composio integration as you need them.
Visit the [Atomic Agent website](https://atomicagent.io/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-site) or inspect the [Atomic Agent source code](https://github.com/AtomicBot-ai/atomic-agent?cta_placement=atomic-agent-repo).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the differences in Tool Router MCP and Semrush MCP?

With a standalone Semrush MCP server, the agents and LLMs can only access a fixed set of Semrush tools tied to that server. However, with the Composio Tool Router, agents can dynamically load tools from Semrush and many other apps based on the task at hand, all through a single MCP endpoint.

### Can I use Tool Router MCP with Atomic Agent?

Yes, you can. Atomic Agent fully supports MCP integration. You get structured tool calling, message history handling, and model orchestration while Tool Router takes care of discovering and serving the right Semrush tools.

### Can I manage the permissions and scopes for Semrush while using Tool Router?

Yes, absolutely. You can configure which Semrush scopes and actions are allowed when connecting your account to Composio. You can also bring your own OAuth credentials or API configuration so you keep full control over what the agent can do.

### How safe is my data with Composio Tool Router?

All sensitive data such as tokens, keys, and configuration is fully encrypted at rest and in transit. Composio is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and follows strict security practices so your Semrush data and credentials are handled as safely as possible.
