## Introduction

Atomic Agent is an open-source AI agent that runs on your machine and supports local models through llama.cpp. Connect it to 1,500+ apps through Composio, including Graphhopper.
This guide uses Atomic Agent's built-in Composio integration. You need Atomic Agent v0.5.6 or later, your own Composio API key, and a Graphhopper account. See the [Atomic Agent documentation](https://atomicagent.io/docs/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-docs) for installation instructions.

## TL;DR

### How Atomic Agent connects to Graphhopper
Atomic Agent connects to Composio's Tool Router over Streamable HTTP MCP. It discovers the tools needed for your request, and Composio handles account authentication.
Execution and account-connection tools follow Atomic Agent's configured approval policy. Review any approval prompt before allowing an action on your connected account.

## Connect Graphhopper to Atomic Agent

### Connect Graphhopper to Atomic Agent
- Sign up or sign in to the [Composio dashboard](https://dashboard.composio.dev/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-api-key). Copy your API key.
- In Atomic Agent, open the Integrations tab and select Composio. Select API key, press e, paste the key, and press Enter. The tools become available immediately, without a restart.
- Ask Atomic Agent to do something in Graphhopper. It searches Composio for the right tool.
- On first use, open the sign-in link returned in the chat. Connect your Graphhopper account, then return to Atomic Agent to continue.
### Headless setup
Add the following line to ~/.atomic-agent/.env, replacing YOUR_COMPOSIO_API_KEY with your key. Start Atomic Agent after saving the file.

```bash
COMPOSIO_API_KEY=YOUR_COMPOSIO_API_KEY
```

## What is the Graphhopper MCP server, and what's possible with it?

The Graphhopper MCP server is an implementation of the Model Context Protocol that connects your AI agent and assistants like Claude, Cursor, etc directly to your Graphhopper account. It provides structured and secure access to powerful routing, geocoding, and optimization services, so your agent can perform actions like planning routes, solving vehicle routing problems, geocoding addresses, and generating travel time isochrones on your behalf.
- Advanced route planning and optimization: Calculate complex routes for cars, bikes, or trucks using advanced parameters, waypoints, and custom profiles, all without manual map work.
- Batch distance and time calculations: Let your agent generate distance or time matrices for multiple origins and destinations, streamlining logistics and route optimization tasks.
- Geocoding and reverse geocoding: Convert between street addresses and GPS coordinates, or look up locations by latitude/longitude, making address management and mapping effortless.
- Isochrone map generation: Automatically create isochrone polygons to visualize areas reachable within a specific travel time or distance from any point—perfect for delivery zones, emergency planning, or site selection.
- Vehicle routing problem (VRP) solving: Offload complex fleet and logistics challenges to your agent, letting it assign deliveries, optimize routes, and minimize travel distances or costs using Graphhopper's VRP tools.

## Supported Tools

| Tool slug | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `GRAPHHOPPER_CLUSTER_POST` | Capacity Clustering | Solve capacity-constrained clustering problems by assigning customers to clusters while minimizing total travel distance. Useful for delivery zone planning, sales territory optimization, and workload balancing. Supports car, bike, and foot routing profiles. Note: Free tier limited to 5 customers per request. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_GEOCODE_GET` | GraphHopper Geocoding | Tool to perform forward or reverse geocoding. Use when converting between textual addresses and latitude/longitude coordinates. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_GET_CLUSTER_SOLUTION` | Get Cluster Solution | Tool to retrieve the solution of an asynchronous clustering job. Use when you have a job ID from a previous cluster calculation request and need to fetch the results. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_GET_MATRIX` | Get Matrix | Tool to compute a distance and/or time matrix using GET request with query parameters. Use for simpler matrix requests with query parameters instead of POST body. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_GET_MATRIX_SOLUTION` | Get Matrix Solution | Tool to retrieve the result of an asynchronous matrix computation job. Use when you have a job ID from a previous matrix calculation request and need to check if it's finished and get the results. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_GET_ROUTE` | GET Route | Tool to calculate the best path connecting two or more points using simple GET request. Use when you need basic routing with query parameters. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_ISOCHRONE_GET` | Get Isochrone | Tool to compute isochrone polygons for a given point. Use when you need to determine areas reachable within time or distance constraints. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_MATRIX_POST` | Calculate Matrix | Tool to calculate distance, time, or weight matrices via POST. Use when you have multiple origins/destinations or a symmetric point set and need a single batch request. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_PROFILES_GET` | Get Custom Profiles | Retrieve all custom routing profiles for your GraphHopper account. Custom profiles allow you to customize routing behavior (e.g., avoid certain roads, limit speeds, prefer certain road types). Use this tool to list available custom profiles that can be used with the Routing, Matrix, and Route Optimization APIs. Note: Custom profiles feature requires a premium GraphHopper package. If not enabled on your account, this returns an empty list. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_ROUTE_POST` | POST Route | Tool to calculate complex routes via POST /route. Use when you need advanced route planning with custom parameters. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_SUBMIT_MATRIX_JOB` | Submit Matrix Job | Tool to submit a matrix computation job for asynchronous processing. Use for large matrices that exceed synchronous limits. Returns a job ID to retrieve results later. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_UPLOAD_GPX_FILE` | Map Match GPX Track | Map-match a GPX track using GraphHopper's Map Matching API. This tool takes GPS track points in GPX format and snaps them to the digital road network. It's useful for: - Cleaning noisy GPS data by aligning points to actual roads - Getting accurate route distances and travel times from recorded GPS tracks - Attaching road information (street names, surfaces) to GPS traces - Generating turn-by-turn instructions for recorded trips The API uses the Viterbi algorithm to find the most likely sequence of road segments that match the input GPS points, accounting for GPS measurement noise. |
| `GRAPHHOPPER_VRP_POST` | GraphHopper VRP POST | Tool to initiate VRP optimization. Use when you need to solve vehicle routing problems synchronously. |

## Troubleshooting

### Why is my API key rejected?

Copy the key directly from the Composio dashboard. Atomic Agent requires ASCII characters because it sends the key in an HTTP header. Remove any extra characters introduced when copying.

### Why are Composio tools unavailable after saving a key?

Check that you use Atomic Agent v0.5.6 or later and that Composio is enabled in your configuration. A "composio": { "enabled": false } setting disables the integration while keeping the saved key on disk.

### Does Composio have a free plan?

The Hobby plan includes 100,000 tool calls per month. Composio-managed OAuth apps have a lower included allowance. See [Composio pricing](/pricing) for the current limits that apply to your connection.

## Complete Code

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the differences in Tool Router MCP and Graphhopper MCP?

With a standalone Graphhopper MCP server, the agents and LLMs can only access a fixed set of Graphhopper tools tied to that server. However, with the Composio Tool Router, agents can dynamically load tools from Graphhopper and many other apps based on the task at hand, all through a single MCP endpoint.

### Can I use Tool Router MCP with Atomic Agent?

Yes, you can. Atomic Agent fully supports MCP integration. You get structured tool calling, message history handling, and model orchestration while Tool Router takes care of discovering and serving the right Graphhopper tools.

### Can I manage the permissions and scopes for Graphhopper while using Tool Router?

Yes, absolutely. You can configure which Graphhopper scopes and actions are allowed when connecting your account to Composio. You can also bring your own OAuth credentials or API configuration so you keep full control over what the agent can do.

### How safe is my data with Composio Tool Router?

All sensitive data such as tokens, keys, and configuration is fully encrypted at rest and in transit. Composio is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and follows strict security practices so your Graphhopper data and credentials are handled as safely as possible.
