## Introduction

Atomic Agent is an open-source AI agent that runs on your machine and supports local models through llama.cpp. Connect it to 1,500+ apps through Composio, including dbt Cloud.
This guide uses Atomic Agent's built-in Composio integration. You need Atomic Agent v0.5.6 or later, your own Composio API key, and a dbt Cloud account. See the [Atomic Agent documentation](https://atomicagent.io/docs/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-docs) for installation instructions.

## Also integrate dbt Cloud with

- [ChatGPT](https://composio.dev/toolkits/dbt_cloud/framework/chatgpt)
- [Claude Cowork](https://composio.dev/toolkits/dbt_cloud/framework/claude-cowork)
- [Hermes](https://composio.dev/toolkits/dbt_cloud/framework/hermes-agent)

## TL;DR

### How Atomic Agent connects to dbt Cloud
Atomic Agent connects to Composio's Tool Router over Streamable HTTP MCP. It discovers the tools needed for your request, and Composio handles account authentication.
Execution and account-connection tools follow Atomic Agent's configured approval policy. Review any approval prompt before allowing an action on your connected account.

## Connect dbt Cloud to Atomic Agent

### Connect dbt Cloud to Atomic Agent
- Sign up or sign in to the [Composio dashboard](https://dashboard.composio.dev/?cta_placement=atomic-agent-api-key). Copy your API key.
- In Atomic Agent, open the Integrations tab and select Composio. Select API key, press e, paste the key, and press Enter. The tools become available immediately, without a restart.
- Ask Atomic Agent to do something in dbt Cloud. It searches Composio for the right tool.
- On first use, open the sign-in link returned in the chat. Connect your dbt Cloud account, then return to Atomic Agent to continue.
### Headless setup
Add the following line to ~/.atomic-agent/.env, replacing YOUR_COMPOSIO_API_KEY with your key. Start Atomic Agent after saving the file.

```bash
COMPOSIO_API_KEY=YOUR_COMPOSIO_API_KEY
```

## What is the dbt Cloud MCP server, and what's possible with it?

The dbt Cloud MCP server is an implementation of the Model Context Protocol that connects your AI agent and assistants like Claude, Cursor, etc directly to your dbt Cloud account. It provides structured and secure access to your dbt Cloud projects, jobs, runs, environments, metadata, artifacts, and Semantic Layer data, so your agent can monitor analytics work, start or manage runs, investigate failures, and query governed metrics on your behalf.
- Project and job operations: Have your agent list dbt Cloud projects and environments, inspect job settings, start job runs, cancel active runs, or retry failed runs.
- Run monitoring and troubleshooting: Let the agent find runs by job, project, environment, status, or time, inspect run details, and retrieve failure information and step logs.
- Artifact and metadata discovery: Direct your agent to list available run artifacts, download selected artifact files, explore metadata, retrieve specific resources, and inspect model health.
- Semantic Layer exploration: Instruct your agent to find governed metrics and saved queries, list available dimensions and entities, and query semantic metrics for analysis.
- Administrative resource management: Have your agent read, create, update, or delete supported dbt Cloud administrative resources through documented operations.

## Supported Tools

| Tool slug | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `DBT_CLOUD_ADMIN_API_DELETE` | Admin API Delete | Irreversibly delete one selected dbt Cloud administrative resource using a fixed documented Admin API operation from the official v2 or v3 OpenAPI specification. Operation values are provider operation IDs. Deleted resources and configuration cannot be recovered by this action. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_ADMIN_API_READ` | Admin API Read | Perform one documented dbt Cloud Admin read selected by operation, using its documented path and optional query parameters from the official v2 and v3 OpenAPI specifications. Operation values are provider operation IDs. This broad read is Bearer-token only because the mapped set includes operations with no official OAuth scope. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_ADMIN_API_WRITE` | Admin API Write | Execute one predeclared dbt Cloud Administrative API POST, PATCH, or PUT operation. Selected operations may create or mutate administrative resources; review the matching provider OpenAPI operation, path parameters, query, and body before execution. Operation values are provider operation IDs. This action is bearer-token only because the operation set includes routes outside dbt Cloud's officially documented OAuth scopes. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_CANCEL_RUN` | Cancel Run | Irreversibly request cancellation of a queued, starting, or running dbt Cloud run. This mutates the selected run's execution state and does not delete its run record. The response is the run record returned after the cancellation request. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_DOWNLOAD_RUN_ARTIFACT` | Download Run Artifact | Download one artifact file from a completed dbt Cloud run using a path returned by List Run Artifacts. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_FIND_SEMANTIC_SAVED_QUERIES` | Find Semantic Saved Queries | List or search saved Semantic Layer queries, or return one exact saved query by name. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_GET_JOB` | Get Job | Return one dbt Cloud job definition and optionally selected related execution context. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_GET_RUN` | Get Run | Return one dbt Cloud run with optional job, environment, step, retry, audit, or log context. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_GET_RUN_FAILURE_DETAILS` | Get Run Failure Details | Return dbt Cloud status and step logs for a failed run. This action only reads the run record and never starts or enqueues a retry. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_ENVIRONMENTS` | List Environments | Return one page of environments for a dbt Cloud project, with optional deployment and name filters. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_JOBS` | List Jobs | Return one page of dbt Cloud jobs, optionally filtered by project, environment, name, schedule, or state. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_PROJECTS` | List Projects | Return one page of dbt Cloud projects, optionally filtered by name, IDs, or deletion state. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_RUN_ARTIFACTS` | List Run Artifacts | Return artifact paths available for a completed dbt Cloud run. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_RUNS` | List Runs | Return one page of dbt Cloud runs, optionally filtered by job, project, environment, status, creation time, finish time, or deletion state. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_SEMANTIC_ATTRIBUTES` | List Semantic Attributes | Return one page of dimensions, entities, group-bys, or queryable time granularities available for selected metrics. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_LIST_SEMANTIC_METRICS` | List Semantic Metrics | Return one page of governed Semantic Layer metrics, optionally searched or grouped. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_QUERY_DISCOVERY_METADATA` | Query Discovery Metadata | List dbt metadata resources in an environment or job-run context, retrieve one node by case-sensitive unique ID, or inspect model health in an environment. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_QUERY_SEMANTIC_METRICS` | Query Semantic Metrics | Submit an ad-hoc dbt Semantic Layer query using metrics and/or group-bys, or execute a saved query; poll it to a documented terminal state and return one decoded JSON result page. Pass next_cursor to retrieve another page without creating a new query. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_RETRY_RUN` | Retry Run | Start a new retry from a failed dbt Cloud run and return the newly enqueued run record. |
| `DBT_CLOUD_TRIGGER_JOB_RUN` | Trigger Job Run | Start a new run for a dbt Cloud job, optionally overriding its revision, target, commands, docs generation, threads, or timeout. Each successful call enqueues a new run. |

## Troubleshooting

### Why is my API key rejected?

Copy the key directly from the Composio dashboard. Atomic Agent requires ASCII characters because it sends the key in an HTTP header. Remove any extra characters introduced when copying.

### Why are Composio tools unavailable after saving a key?

Check that you use Atomic Agent v0.5.6 or later and that Composio is enabled in your configuration. A "composio": { "enabled": false } setting disables the integration while keeping the saved key on disk.

### Does Composio have a free plan?

The Hobby plan includes 100,000 tool calls per month. Composio-managed OAuth apps have a lower included allowance. See [Composio pricing](/pricing) for the current limits that apply to your connection.

## Complete Code

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the differences in Tool Router MCP and dbt Cloud MCP?

With a standalone dbt Cloud MCP server, the agents and LLMs can only access a fixed set of dbt Cloud tools tied to that server. However, with the Composio Tool Router, agents can dynamically load tools from dbt Cloud and many other apps based on the task at hand, all through a single MCP endpoint.

### Can I use Tool Router MCP with Atomic Agent?

Yes, you can. Atomic Agent fully supports MCP integration. You get structured tool calling, message history handling, and model orchestration while Tool Router takes care of discovering and serving the right dbt Cloud tools.

### Can I manage the permissions and scopes for dbt Cloud while using Tool Router?

Yes, absolutely. You can configure which dbt Cloud scopes and actions are allowed when connecting your account to Composio. You can also bring your own OAuth credentials or API configuration so you keep full control over what the agent can do.

### How safe is my data with Composio Tool Router?

All sensitive data such as tokens, keys, and configuration is fully encrypted at rest and in transit. Composio is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and follows strict security practices so your dbt Cloud data and credentials are handled as safely as possible.
