## Introduction

### How to connect Cohere MCP with ChatGPT
[ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com/) can take action across your apps and files, stay with a project for hours, and turn a goal into finished materials like sheets, slides, and docs, not just answers.
In this guide, I will explain the easiest and most secure way to connect your Cohere account to ChatGPT via Composio Connect, so it can generate text, create embeddings, classify inputs, rerank results, and summarize content through natural language commands without ever putting your account credentials at risk.

## Also integrate Cohere with

- [Claude Cowork](https://composio.dev/toolkits/cohere/framework/claude-cowork)
- [Hermes](https://composio.dev/toolkits/cohere/framework/hermes-agent)
- [Atomic Agent](https://composio.dev/toolkits/cohere/framework/atomic-agent)

## TL;DR

### Why use Composio over default connectors?
- Apps with read and write access. Default connectors mostly can read your data. Composio's Cohere integration lets ChatGPT take actions like creating drafts, sending updates, labeling records, and more.
- 1,500+ SaaS toolkits out of the box. Composio gives you instant access to a vast catalog of pre-built connectors, from Gmail and Slack to Notion, Linear, and Salesforce.
- One MCP server for every app. Connect any of your applications on demand through a single endpoint, rather than juggling a separate server for each app.
- Smart, context-aware tool loading. Unlike traditional MCP servers that dump every available tool into the LLM context window, Composio searches for and loads only the tools relevant to the task at hand.
- Cross-app automation. Chain actions across multiple apps in a single run - fetch a thread, summarize it in Notion, and post highlights to Slack without leaving the conversation.

## Connect Cohere to ChatGPT

### Prerequisites
- A ChatGPT account. We will use the [ChatGPT desktop app](https://openai.com/chatgpt/download/), and the steps are the same on the web.
- Access to the Cohere workspace you want to connect.
- [Composio plugin](https://dashboard.composio.dev/login?utm_source=toolkits&utm_medium=framework_template&utm_campaign=chatgpt&utm_content=composio_connect&next=%2F~%2Forg%2Fconnect%2Fclients%2Fchatgpt).
Note: Composio connects through OAuth. You will be asked to sign in and approve specific permissions. Review the permission screen carefully if you are using a work account.
### Step-by-step: Connect Cohere to ChatGPT
### 1. Install the Composio plugin
Click the button. ChatGPT opens the Composio plugin page. Click Install plugin.
[Install in ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com/plugins/plugin_asdk_app_6a58503580c08191b78cc5bdaf4eba6e)
You can also find it inside ChatGPT: go to Settings, open Plugins, search the marketplace for Composio, and click Install plugin.
### 2. Authenticate
After you install, ChatGPT asks you to authenticate with Composio. Log in and click Allow access to authorize ChatGPT to use your Composio account.
### 3. Start using Composio
That is it. Composio tools are now available in ChatGPT. Type @Composio followed by your request, for example @Composio find unread Cohere messages and summarize them, and it will run the actions you authorize. On first use it asks you to authorize Cohere.
### Option 2: Add Composio as an MCP server
If you cannot use the plugin marketplace, add Composio as a custom MCP server instead.
### 1. Open the MCP settings
In ChatGPT, go to Settings and open the Plugins section. Inside the Plugins page, click the MCP tab.
### 2. Add the server
Click Add server. In the Name field enter Composio, for Type select Streamable HTTP, and in the URL field paste the Composio MCP server URL:

```bash
https://connect.composio.dev/mcp
```

## What is the Cohere MCP server, and what's possible with it?

The Cohere MCP server is an implementation of the Model Context Protocol that connects your AI agent and assistants like Claude, Cursor, etc directly to your Cohere account. It provides structured and secure access so your agent can perform Cohere operations on your behalf.

## Supported Tools

| Tool slug | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `COHERE_CANCEL_BATCH` | Cancel Batch | Cancel one in-progress Cohere batch. This requires a production Cohere API key, stops the batch irreversibly, and cannot be undone. |
| `COHERE_CANCEL_EMBED_JOB` | Cancel Embed Job | Irreversibly cancel one active Cohere asynchronous embed job by ID. Cohere accrued charges for work processed before cancellation still apply, and partial results are not available. Cancel only a caller-owned job. This action sends one request and does not poll for the cancelled state. |
| `COHERE_CHAT` | Chat | Generate one non-streaming Cohere chat response from an ordered conversation, optionally using documents, tools, structured output, or reasoning controls. |
| `COHERE_CHECK_API_KEY` | Check API Key | Check whether the connected Cohere API key is valid and return its organization and owner identifiers when available. |
| `COHERE_CREATE_BATCH` | Create Batch | Start one asynchronous Cohere batch from an existing validated batch request dataset and return immediately without polling. Cohere requires a production API key for the Batch API. |
| `COHERE_CREATE_DATASET` | Create Dataset | Upload a Cohere dataset and start asynchronous validation. Returns immediately without waiting for validation to finish. |
| `COHERE_CREATE_EMBED_JOB` | Create Embed Job | Start one asynchronous Cohere embedding job for a validated embed-input dataset and return immediately without polling. |
| `COHERE_DELETE_DATASET` | Delete Dataset | Permanently delete a Cohere dataset by ID. This deletion cannot be undone. |
| `COHERE_DETOKENIZE_TOKENS` | Detokenize Tokens | Convert ordered Cohere token IDs back to text using the tokenizer for an explicit matching model. |
| `COHERE_EMBED_INPUTS` | Embed Inputs | Create v2 embeddings from exactly one input form: text strings, image data URIs, or structured multimodal content. |
| `COHERE_GET_BATCH` | Get Batch | Retrieve one asynchronous Cohere batch's status and counters by batch ID. A usable batch ID depends on a production-key CREATE_BATCH lifecycle; this action performs one read only, and callers control any bounded polling. |
| `COHERE_GET_DATASET` | Get Dataset | Retrieve one Cohere dataset by ID, including its asynchronous validation state, schema, files, parsing details, and metrics. Callers control any polling and should bound it. |
| `COHERE_GET_DATASET_USAGE` | Get Dataset Usage | Read the organization's Cohere dataset-storage consumption in bytes. |
| `COHERE_GET_EMBED_JOB` | Get Embed Job | Retrieve one Cohere asynchronous embedding job's current status, model, and input and output dataset identifiers by job ID. |
| `COHERE_GET_MODEL` | Get Model | Retrieve a Cohere model's endpoint compatibility, context size, features, tokenizer, and default sampling parameters by model name. |
| `COHERE_LIST_BATCHES` | List Batches | Return one page of asynchronous Cohere batches and their statuses without creating or cancelling work. |
| `COHERE_LIST_DATASETS` | List Datasets | Return one offset-based page of Cohere datasets, optionally filtered by type, validation status, or creation time. Cohere provides no total or continuation metadata, so callers control offset explicitly. |
| `COHERE_LIST_EMBED_JOBS` | List Embed Jobs | List Cohere asynchronous embedding jobs and their current statuses. |
| `COHERE_LIST_MODELS` | List Models | Discover Cohere model names and capabilities, optionally filtered to an endpoint or its default model. Returns one page without auto-pagination. |
| `COHERE_RERANK_DOCUMENTS` | Rerank Documents | Rank text documents by relevance to a query and return the highest-scoring source documents. |
| `COHERE_TOKENIZE_TEXT` | Tokenize Text | Convert text into token IDs with an explicit Cohere model. Detokenization must use the same model because token IDs differ between model tokenizers. |
| `COHERE_TRANSCRIBE_AUDIO` | Transcribe Audio | Transcribe an uploaded audio file to text with a Cohere transcription model. |

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the differences in Tool Router MCP and Cohere MCP?

With a standalone Cohere MCP server, the agents and LLMs can only access a fixed set of Cohere tools tied to that server. However, with the Composio Tool Router, agents can dynamically load tools from Cohere and many other apps based on the task at hand, all through a single MCP endpoint.

### Can I use Tool Router MCP with ChatGPT?

Yes, you can. ChatGPT fully supports MCP integration. You get structured tool calling, message history handling, and model orchestration while Tool Router takes care of discovering and serving the right Cohere tools.

### Can I manage the permissions and scopes for Cohere while using Tool Router?

Yes, absolutely. You can configure which Cohere scopes and actions are allowed when connecting your account to Composio. You can also bring your own OAuth credentials or API configuration so you keep full control over what the agent can do.

### How safe is my data with Composio Tool Router?

All sensitive data such as tokens, keys, and configuration is fully encrypted at rest and in transit. Composio is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and follows strict security practices so your Cohere data and credentials are handled as safely as possible.
